Artist's Comments

Actually, I was told that Anasazi is another case of miscommunication between indigenous people and ignorant white invaders, and that Anasazi is not the name the natives gave to themselves and their ancestors, but the name they gave to strangers who might be enemies. But, since I wasn't told what the correct name is, I pretty much have to keep using it. "Ancestral Puebloans" might be an accurate historical identification, but it's not a name.

So, this is pottery made between roughly 1400 to 800 years ago by the "Anasazi" people of Mesa Verde in what is now Colorado. Mesa Verde is one of the largest concentrations of cliff dwellings to have survived until modern times, and a very cool place to visit.

Yeah, they made some really nice pottery. Basketry, too. The earlier culture, before they learned to make pottery, made some of the finest baskets ever produced in North America.

Yep. Not the best I've seen, but still nice. Most of the finest pieces are in private collections, unfortunately.

Yes. I guess that shouldn't be surprising, since they built houses that have lasted 800 years. :)
