If I'd stayed on the path, I would never have seen it. :) The green plants at the top are at ground level, but the ground is only that high because this log is acting as a retaining wall. At the foot of the log, which is a good two feet in diameter, is the beginning of the shoreline.

This is up above the normal high tideline, but if it wasn't there the whole are beyond it wouldn't last long. Luckily, it's a cedar, so it's been there a long time, and will still be there a long time from now.
