The Shot O' The Day. A little Green Heron fishing for his lunch. He's actually a wild visitor to the zoo, but probably never leaves.
I knew they were excellent fishermen, but I didn't realize quite how phenomenal their abilities are. Shortly after I took this shot, he moved a bit to the right, where there was a solid mat of the green duckweed you can see in this shot.
Absolutely nothing was visible through this mat of weed, even at maximum magnification through my lens. At least, nothing was visible to me, not even a ripple. But, he snared three minnows from under that mat in about 30 seconds. He didn't miss once, but I have no idea how he knew they were there.
