Take Off!

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 10, 2008, 9:24 PM
Take Off...
for the Great White North, as Bob and Doug MacKenzie recommended, with a little help from Geddy Lee, oh so long ago. Well, that's what I'm doing. I'm off to Alaska very, very, very early in the morning. (I'm not looking forward to that part, in case you couldn't tell. The reason they shoot people at dawn is because most of us would rather die than be up that early.)

So, forgive me for not thanking you all individually for the recent :+fav:s. But, thank you all! They are definitely appreciated. And, I apologize for not being able to look at all your deviations. I know I'll be missing some great art, but I also know I'll never catch up, so why even pretend?

I'll be back in a week or so, assuming I don't fall off the boat or get eaten by a bear. Take off, eh! Hoser!

Thanks!

As always, all your comments, positive or negative, are welcome but, if you want me to see them, don't leave them on this page. Send me a note or comment on a photo, and I'll see it much sooner. Feel free to link to anything of yours that I've faved, from this page, though.

And, if you dropped by to say thank you,

You're Welcome!

If you said something nice about me,

Thanks!

I try to stay out of camera stores... :)

The first time I went into a camera store to look at lenses I got asked if I lived at home or rented because I didn't have enough for the lens I was looking at at that moment! What the hell does that have to do with anything I thought? :o

It just seems like I'm not the only one that has troubles like this, either bad service or none at all :(

 Every time I read about tortures of buying new DSLR cameras or the *stuff* for them I am tickled pink by my shrewdness to go for G6 instead. :giggle: No headaches here. :w00t:

:D Oh, I visited very small *Mom & Pop* camera shop in my neighborhood to get the feel of the camera before buying it online and was surprised they had all newest models in store - and weren't asking me for bank note to hand them to me for trying the fit. :giggle: Maybe you have something like that around your place too. :fingerscrossed:

Nice. That was probably partly because you're young, partly because you're female, and largely because the salesman was a jerk. But, I suppose one reason to ask if you owned your own home was that you might need a second mortgage to afford some of those lenses. I saw one online that they were asking $24,999 for. That's more than I paid for my car, when it was brand new.

I'm sorry, though not surprised, to learn the same problem exists over there. On the other hand, I had four or five different salespeople approach me at Best Buy. But, I know better than to ask them anything.

Nah. The tortures involved have nothing to do with it being a DSLR. It's the same for anything more complex than a bar of soap, these days. If I were looking for a compact like the G6, it would just the same.

That mom & pop store is exactly what Phoenix doesn't have, and just what I would have preferred. But, unless there's one that's so shy that they don't even advertise in the phone book, there isn't one. Of course, if people keep using them for research but not buying from them, they'll all be gone, soon.

That is why I have a Sony A100. It felt best in my hand. You're the first person I've heard talk about that as an important criteria in selecting a camera. Its near the top of the list when I shop for one.
I'm waiting to see the Sony 350 too. I like the 700 but it may be more camera than I have the skill to use.

True, I was by myself and I probably looked a little lost or something because I didn't exactly know what I wanted, I just wanted some suggestions or advice, I had some money but that was his first question so when he figured that I didn't have enough I probably wasn't worth his time or something. Quite sad really. I have not gone in to ask about lenses or anything for my camera since :(

$24,999 for a lens?!?!?!?! I can't believe it :faint:

Okay i just gotta say...........I GOT INTO THE PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Secondly i would recommend my D80, it is very good in price and also you get a 18-135lens, the grip is excellent as are the controls (easy to reach and all that) it has a good weight being not to heavy yet not feather light (i definitly agree about the weight! If a camera is too light i am almost afraid to break it...that said it may be a good idea so i will take more care but anyway lol) it has 10MP and very good quality, you've seen some of my newer work right? although i haven't done that much heavy work persay, but from what i have done it comes out perfectly with RAW format and also it gives the potion to save both Raw and either High, medium or low quality JPEG's which is very usful when you want to quickly look through images on the laptop after. The control with a RAW image is amazing, as you know lol

Anyway must nip off. Be good...!

Yeah, I don't understand why people don't rate ergonomics as highly as other aspects. Maybe they expect to mostly use it on a tripod, with a remote release. Or maybe they've never picked up a camera that made them go "ooooh, that's nice!", like my 7D did. I guess if you don't know what good is, you can't complain about bad.

I wouldn't worry about the A700 being beyond your ability to use. You've come a long way in a short time, since I started watching your work and, if you can teach at college level, you can learn anything necessary to operate a camera. It's more a question of how much control you want over the process, and how much the camera can make things easier for you. The higher end cameras offer those advantages, but they still let you do the point-and-shoot option when you want.

I've been reading what I can find on the 300/350s and one of the things I hadn't considered until recently is that the 14 MP sensor shows you EVERY tiny little flaw in your lenses. I have some good ones, but I don't have world-class glass, so that kind of worries me. But, I'll keep reading, and see if other people run into problems with that.
